Mastering Metacognition: Alevel grade improvement

New from January 2023: Using CJ for Peer-to-Peer 'Learning by Evaluation'

Assess Progress will be undertaking a National Programme of Peer-to-Peer 'Learning by Evaluation' for A-Level subjects from January 2023.

IN SCHOOL TRIALS FROM SEPT 2022

Students participate in a termly (six week) intervention study that takes no longer than 1 hour a week. National setting of six essay questions over six weeks by subject specialists.

  • Week One: Students answer a subject-specific question and upload work
  • Week Two: Complete the second question and assess a selection of scripts from across the range (rarely from their own school) from the first session (no longer than 20 minutes). They can clip sections of scripts, save particular 'favourite' scripts, and receive feedback, improving their metacognition.
  • Week 3: Complete the third question and assess a selection of scripts from session two. This process continues for four weeks.

Each week complete analysis including the position of the student's script, the anonymised position of all other scripts, access to all scripts including WAGOLLs, their relative position in the scheme and peer feedback are all available to the student and tutor, who also assess' the papers (20 minutes).

  • Week Six: One of the original questions is re-visited. Results show student/school / MAT progress over the intervention period as the final session assesses the new responses against the initial responses - Proving Progress.

Mastering Metacognition:Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

New for Sept 2023: Peer 2 Peer 'Learning by Evaluation' for improved quality of submissions and know

Assess Progress will be undertaking a National Programme of Peer 2 Peer 'Learning by Evaluation' for A-Level subjects from January 2023.

The programme's objective is to allow students to submit draft work for peer review and feedback while also reviewing the work of others nationally. This process is known to support improved cognition and support the development of improvement strategies in students.

As students are aware of the quality of work produced (by others), they can critically reflect on their learning in comparison. This supports them in improving their work quality before final submission to tutors.

The plan, do, review, feedback process reduces teacher workload as less student feedback is required from tutors in the presubmission phase. In addition, tutors can draw on the very best of the submissions (WAGOLL) to aid further teaching points, planning, and improvement strategies during taught tutor time.
